Dr. apt. Numlil Khaira Rusdi, M.Si, a student of the Doctoral Program in Biomedical Sciences, discovered the potential benefits of soybeans to prevent breast cancer. This is as the result of the apt. Numlil Khaira Rusdi, S. Farm who discovered the potential of soybean seeds to inhibit the development of breast cancer cells.
“Increased consumption of soy products reduces the risk of breast cancer,” said Numlil in a doctoral promotion test session at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (FKUI), Wednesday (5/1/2022). Numlil explained in the results of research and research conducted on cancer-modified mice, then given soybean seed extract which has phytoestrogen properties, has properties like hormones. So soybean seeds contain phytoestrogens, able to fight and suppress the development of tumor cells and cancer, especially breast cancer.
“The results of the meta-analysis show that high consumption of soy products, which contain phytoestrogens, can reduce the risk of breast cancer related to estrogen receptor (ER),” said Numlil. Keep in mind that most breast cancer patients have estrogen receptor-positive cancer cells, which are known as ER positive. So in this study, if the development of ER can be suppressed by consuming soybean seed extract which works like hormone therapy in breast cancer patients, then consumption of soybean seeds can prevent and suppress cancer growth. This is also what Numlil says, in various studies that Asian women have lower rates of breast cancer than European women, because they consume a lot of soy products.
“Increasing consumption of soy products reduces the risk of breast cancer. This protective effect is also due to the habit of Asian women consuming soy products from an early age and continuously,” concluded Numlil.
